How to Move into Data Engineering from a Non-IT Background
· 5 min read
Moving into Data Engineering without an IT degree is possible, but it is a matter of consistent practice, not shortcuts. The order in which you learn matters more than the number of tools you list on a resume.
Start with SQL, not Spark
Almost every Data Engineering interview begins with SQL. Joins, window functions, de-duplication and query tuning are the foundation everything else rests on.
A sensible learning order
- Linux and Git basics
- SQL from basics to window functions
- Python for data work: files, APIs, Pandas, testing
- PySpark and how distributed processing behaves
- One cloud platform in depth, then a second for comparison
- A warehouse or lakehouse: Snowflake or Databricks
- Orchestration with Airflow and modelling with dbt
Build production-level projects deeply
Production-level projects that you can build, debug and explain are worth more than several tutorial copies. Interviewers test how you think when something breaks.
